Producer Farms
The farms producing our Celtic Pride Premium Beef are:
- Registered holdings in Wales;
- Registered under a recognised farm assurance scheme.
All cattle must be born, reared and finished on Welsh farms. From this a Celtic Pride Premium Beef Producers Club is established. Club activities will include carcass classification and best practice in selection for slaughter.
The club will encourage members to maintain records of animal liveweight taken at agreed intervals, with the aim of a minimum of 3 occasions to ensure an adequate liveweight gain.
As a supplier to Celtic Pride Premium Beef producers agree to make the farm premises, land, livestock and livestock identification and movement records available for inspection by Celtic Pride Ltd at reasonable request by a Celtic Pride representative.
Production Systems
Cattle supplied to Celtic Pride Premium Beef are reared and finished in semi-intensive or extensive systems of production in which grass and other home grown feeds from major part of the animals lifetime diet. The cattle will:
- Be steers and heifers of at least 14 months, and no more than 30 months of age at slaughter
- Will be a progeny of a beef breed sire
- The animal should have at least one summer grazing at pasture
- Animal growth rate should be maintained at approximately 0.6-0.9 kg/d throughout the main growth period
- For 60 day prior to slaughter should be maintained at 1-1.2 kg/d

Gareth & Beti Owen
Gareth and Beti Owen are third generation farmers at their 550-acre farm, Y Fron Llanbrynmair, in the heart of Mid Wales. It is a mixed farm of both beef and sheep.
The family farm 1400 ewes which lamb down in February / March time. They also finish 80-100 cattle per year, which are then supplied to the Celtic Pride premium beef scheme. Their breeds are mainly homebred Charolais and Limosan.
Gareth holds the post of Chairman of Celtic Pride Ltd and as one of the inaugural members of the scheme has been passionate that the values are promoted to other farmers.
"I am delighted to see Celtic Pride beef getting the attention it deserves, with rave reviews by customers in top quality national restaurants. Not least that the attention to detail ourselves and other local producers show is well rewarded and shows a strong future".
The farm has also been a key supplier to the scheme since its launch back in 2003, due to its many benefits. The one thing that really stands out for Gareth is the use of the local abattoir in Llanidloes, which not only helps reduce travel expenses to himself and the environment it also puts the cattle under less stress, which in turn creates better quality meat.
Another benefit he is keen to point out is there is a premium to be gained from the finished cattle. On top of the fact there is a guaranteed market for the beef due to the link with Castell Howell.
Gareth and Beti Owen hope to continue supplying beef to the scheme as long as possible due to these wonderful benefits available.
Bowen Jones
Bowen Jones farms with his wife and family at Blaenblodau New Inn Pencader where they keep Beulah Speckle Faced ewes at their 600 acre farm.
Bowen finishes between 450-500 cattle each year and has been a supplier to the scheme for the past two and a half years. Charolais, Limousin, Belgian Blue and the occasional Welsh native cross are the breed of cattle that he finishes for the scheme.
Bowen states
"The fact there is personal help from the procurement officer is a huge benefit from the scheme and on top of this any issues that arise are dealt with in an effective and efficient manor."
