A company that specialises in top quality meat that can be traced to the Mid Wales farm where the animal was reared has won a major contract to supply Nisa-Today's member stores across Wales and the Midlands.
WelshMeatOnline, based at the Welsh Centre of Excellence for Butchery Skills in Welshpool, will supply Welsh Lamb from Mid Wales farms and Celtic Pride premium Welsh Beef from Montgomeryshire farms direct to potentially around 300 Nisa-Today's stores.
The contract is a reward for WelshMeatOnline's £100,000 investment in a state of the art meat cutting plant that is licenced by the Food Standards Agency Wales and Meat Hygiene Services.
Employing six skilled staff, the company already supplies retail outlets and award winning restaurants and hotels across Mid Wales as well as individual customers who order meat products online. Now the plan is to expand further across England and to secure contracts to supply local authorities.
"Winning the contract to supply Nisa-Today's stores is great news not only for our company but also for consumers, Mid Wales farmers and the region's economy in general," said Nick Davies, of WelshMeatOnline.
"Trust, honesty and traceability are our watchwords as we take pride in supplying premium Celtic Pride Beef and Welsh Lamb direct from the farm. Our meat is bred, slaughtered, butchered and packed in Mid Wales to cut down the food miles.
"Our aim is to provide customers with a top quality, truly local product. People like to know where the meat has come from.
"Having been a chef for over 20 years and competed all over the world with the Welsh National Culinary Team, I am well used to cooking with quality ingredients. I understand the importance of quality and presentation to meet consumers' high expectations.
"That's why we take great care to ensure that our meat products are neatly trimmed to reduce waste and are ready to cook when removed from their gas flushed pack."
The company will be promoting and selling its range of quality meat products at the BBC Good Food Show at the NEC, Birmingham from November 25-29, which is attended by around 130,000 people.
Steve Hodson, Nisa-Today's group local sourcing manager, said: "The social and economic importance of locally sourced products is well recognised and Nisa-Today's is developing new and exciting opportunities for its members and the communities in which they live and work.
"More than ever before, people are taking notice of where their food comes from, what goes into its production and the journey it takes to end up on their plates.
"We're delighted to work with WelshMeatOnline. The quality of the produce is superb and our members will surely benefit from the opportunity to stock this range of beef and lamb products."
Gareth Evans, manager of Celtic Pride, said: "I am delighted that Celtic Pride premium Welsh Beef is now being made available to consumers through Nisa-Today's stores. I personally select the Celtic Pride beef from Montgomeryshire farms for WelshMeatOnline, which ensures that food miles are minimised."

This evening a gathering of 41 producers met at the Greyhound Hotel in Builth Wells, for the annual producer meeting. A lively discussion followed presentations by Tim Rowe, Edward Morgan and Gareth Evans. The presentations highlighted that the hospitality trade are continuing to recognise Celtic Pride as a quality beef brand and that during the past four years there has been significant investment in bringing the brand to market.
The producers highlighted that the option to sell their livestock as store cattle in a bouyant market was tempting. There were a few suggestions that the pricing grid needed to be reviewed in line with market trends.
